Glendale City Council Voter Guide: Where the Candidates Stand on Gun Legislation

ScreenHunter_39 Mar. 29 12.11Tuesday is election day throughout California. In Glendale, polls open at 7 a.m., and five local candidates will vie for one open seat on the Glendale City Council.

Here’s a recap of how each of the candidates weighed in—or not—on the subject of Glendale’s
moves in 2013 to ban gun and ammo sales on city property, and effectively bar the Glendale Gun Show from the publicly owned Glendale Civic Auditorium. The candidates are listed in the order in which they appear on the June 3 ballot:

  • Rick Barnes:  Opposed the gun-and-ammo initiatives as a council candidate in 2013; told the News-Press he was reconsidering his stance in the wake of the May 23 UC Santa Barbara mass shooting, and said he supported the idea of a local ban on high-capacity magazine sales.
  • Mike Mohill:  Expressed support for the council’s gun-show ban as a candidate in 2013; told the News-Press he was too busy to respond to a 2014 Coalition for a Better Glendale survey on the gun show and gun violence.
  • Vartan Gharpetian: Told the News-Press he would, in the newspaper’s words, “not oppose the gun-show ban in the future.” He expressed provisional support for a gun buy-back program, and did not take a stance on the issue of high-capacity magazine sales within the city.
